New Mexico Coach Joe Franklin Remembers Life of John Haaland and His Impact on Track and Field, Albuquerque Communities
Published by
New Mexico cross country and track and field coach Joe Franklin reflects on the life of John Haaland and his contributions not only to the sport, but the Albuquerque community following the Lobos' 12th consecutive Mountain West Conference women's championship in Logan, Utah. Haaland, the chair of the Great Southwest Classic in Albuquerque for 18 years, died Sunday at age 74. Haaland attended the New Mexico home football game Saturday and suffered a fall, hitting his head. He was rushed to New Mexico Heart Hospital, where it was discovered he had bleeding in his brain. Haaland later lost consciousness and passed away. Haaland was presented by Franklin in January with a New Mexico turquoise jersey, one of only three given to a non-athlete in Franklin's tenure in Albuquerque. |
